Hellyeah’s Tom Maxwell on Nothingface Status: ‘There’s Just Nothing Anymore’
Much like his Hellyeah bandmates, on occasion guitarist Tom Maxwell gets the questions about his former band and the possibility of a reunion, but during an interview on the Talk Toomey podcast, Maxwell appeared to be of the mindset that there is no future for Nothingface.
When asked about the band, Maxwell stated (as transcribed by Theprp.com), “It was a good time but you know people change and people are different—they’re not the same people. Matt Holt you know is doing his thing and we don’t get along, we don’t talk, I don’t want nothing to do with him or his life, it’s not gonna happen man. I have dignity.”
And while he has his issues with Holt, Maxwell feels that the option of reuniting either with Holt or finding another vocalist is not something that should be done. “I would rather people that saw the band in its heyday when it was great remember that than go out there with some hack version of a singer that can’t f–king do it, that’s bottom line,” explained the guitarist. “It’s like this, man and f–king Vinnie [Paul] put it this way to me too. You get a bad divorce from your first wife, you ever think about going back to her after you remarried and you’re happy? Same s–t. I mean who’s going to be happy about it? The fans? The fans are going to be disappointed when they see something that’s not… You know.”
He concludes, “There’s just nothing anymore. There’s no communication, there’s no desire. I don’t need to do it, I don’t have to do it. I’m happy where I’m at and I’m going to leave it right where it is. It’s dead.”
During their heyday, Nothingface released five studio albums, reaching their peak with the Violence and Skeletons albums in 2000 and 2003. But the band split in 2004, citing issues with their record label TVT. After testing out a few side projects, Nothingface reunited in 2005 and went through a couple of lineups before finally disbanding again in 2011.
