Dying Fetus Show How Brutal Is Done, Old School Style

“Any old school motherf—ers in here?” Dying Fetus vocalist and guitarist John Gallagher shouted to a packed Starland Ballroom. Half of the room jagged their horns in the air. Yet it’s a pretty safe bet half of that room was not even born when Gallagher and former bassist Jason Netherton formed Dying Fetus and wrote the band’s first demos in the early ’90s.

That was also the kick off point for the night’s first healthy karate pit, proving the band is one of the founders for slam metal — a moshy, breakdown-heavy style of brutal death metal. It is also influenced by bands like Devourment and Skinless.

Out of all the bands that played Sunday — including Toxic Holocaust, Winds of Plague, Chimaira and Hatebreed — Fetus was the loudest. The vibrations from the stage actually hurt my throat and made my teeth slightly chatter (that is not a complaint, either). With Gallagher sporting a Suffocation shirt and bassist/vocalist Sean Basley wearing a Necrophagist shirt, it was pretty obvious the boys wrapped up the Summer Slaughter Tour before following Hatebreed and Chimaira for a couple weeks. As hectic of a tour schedule they stay on, the band is also direct support for Cannibal Corpse on a month-long European tour starting Oct. 2.

Even though there are no more U.S. dates lined up for them, you can get a piece of Dying Fetus in a couple weeks when their seventh album ‘Descend Into Depravity’ is released on Sept. 15.
