Bassist Duff McKagan Rejoining Guns N’ Roses for Five South American Shows
The rumors are true! Bassist Duff McKagan will be rejoining Guns N’ Roses for a handful of shows, serving as a fill-in for current Guns N’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson while he returns to The Replacements for their reunion shows.
Stinson himself revealed the news to Billboard. He explained, “I had those Replacements shows come up the same time the [South American] tour came up and it got to be a scheduling issue right out of the gate. I didn’t want to f— anyone up in Guns by saying, ‘Hey, I can’t do this tour’ or anything like that. Luckily, someone was able to reach out to Duff and he was amenable to the idea was into doing it.”
Stinson adds, “It’s Duff being the kind of good sport he is, trying to help Axl [Rose] out. So I’m like, ‘Thanks dude, for covering my ass on this one.’ I think people are gonna be really stoked about it. It’s gonna be fun for everyone.”
The rumors began earlier this week when McKagan tweeted a hint that he would be turning up with Guns N’ Roses soon. Now comes word that McKagan will perform with the band at shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Asuncion, Paraguay, La Paz, Boliva, Recife, Brazil and Fortaleza, Brazil during the band’s upcoming South American tour. The dates span April 6 through 17. Stinson will actually be with Guns N’ Roses April 2 and 3 in Brazil before departing to join The Replacements. He’ll rejoin Guns N’ Roses May 13 in Bethlehem, Pa. for their next U.S. date.
McKagan also added in a statement, “It’s pretty great to play these songs again, and looking forward to playing some gigs with my pal again. South America is always a radical place for rock ‘n’ roll … and I’m honored to be doing this thing in that place.” Stinson says that McKagan joined Guns N’ Roses for rehearsals last month in Los Angeles and will likely run through the set again before the dates.
The bassist left Guns N’ Roses in 1993. He did make a guest appearance with the band in 2010 at London’s O2 Arena, where played a few songs during the show. His band, Duff McKagan’s Loaded, also opened shows for Guns N’ Roses in 2011 and the bassist made some more guest appearances with GN’R during that run.
