Dismember have dismembered, literally! The Swedish band has broken up after over two decades of headbanging glory.

The band formed in Stockholm, considered a heavy metal mecca, back in 1988. Dismember released eight studio albums over the course of their history but they've decided to hang up their guitars and move on to other projects. Their most recent studio album was 2008's self-titled release on Regain Records.

Bassist Tobias Cristiansson issued a terse statement, which read as follows: "After 23 years, Dismember have now decided to quit. We wish to thank all our fans for your support."

Hmm, that's not exactly informative or particularly enlightening, but it certainly gets the message across. Dismember had recently played its first show in three years this summer at Death Feast Open Air in Germany. Before that, the death metallers hadn't played a live gig since 2008.
