Are DevilDriver -- a band formed in 2002 -- elder statesmen of the metal scene? While that sounds like something out of an alternate universe, it's definitely been the case with the Thrash and Burn tour, which stopped in New York in early August. And along with most of the other eight bands being younger, the shows' attendees have been as well.

"There have been a lot of younger generations coming out," Thy Will Be Done frontman J. Costa told Noisecreep. "At first we didn't know how it was going to go, since there are a lot of deathcore bands on this. But we look at it as a bookend tour, where we're a metal band opening the show, and DevilDriver's a metal band closing it."

And while young, the audience at the sold-out show was appreciative of all of the bands -- from the straight-ahead metal of Thy Will Be Done to the two-singer attack of Despised Icon and the neo-nu-metal of Emmure. While a small, but noticeable, portion of the audience left after Emmure's set, the night belonged to DevilDriver.

There aren't many second chances in metal, and nobody expected a band formed by Dez Fafara from the ashes of Coal Chamber to be all that good, much less persevere. But over the course of four albums, seven years and lots of time on the road, DevilDriver have earned credibility and respect among fans, musicians and critics alike. The band ripped through an hour-long set, drawing mainly from their two most recent albums, closing out the solid, busy Thrash and Burn bill. "It's always a pleasure returning to NYC, 'specially when the [Fillmore New York at Irving] Plaza is sold out!" Fafara commented. "DevilDriver had a killer evening and would like to thank all the bands on the tour, record label and friends that came out to support!"
