Dave Grohl, Krist Novolselic, Courtney Love Not Happy With Kurt Cobain Figure in ‘Guitar Hero’

Nirvana's surviving members have always been at odds with Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, when it comes to handling affairs involving the iconic band and its late frontman. And not much has changed, even if they all seem to come together in protest over the Kurt Cobain character in 'Guitar Hero 5.'

The controversy is not simply over the character's existence, but over the Cobain-like figure's usage, where once unlocked, players can use Kurt as their main character to play all the songs -- a move that Love claims is in breach of the contract she signed with Activision. In retort to the allegations, Activision has stated, "'Guitar Hero' secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love."

In a joint statement, both Grohl and Novoselic explain that they knew that Kurt's image was going to be used in conjunction with two Nirvana songs only and stress that "we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the 'Guitar Hero' game." The two go on to "urge Activision to do the right thing in 're-locking Kurt's character so that this won't continue in the future," citing that "it's hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists' music alongside cartoon characters."

Though Love agrees, calling the use of Cobain throughout the game "a travesty" via Twitter, there is no bonding between the two parties over this. Love still contends that Grohl is somehow responsible, though in Grohl's statement with Novoselic they assert that the "name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate -- we have no control whatsoever in that area."

While Love threatens to sue and angrily rants through Twitter, Grohl and Novoselic say in closing that "Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better."
