Converge Premiere ‘Axe To Fall’ Video on Fearnet

Stop-action metal videos that feature extreme brutality or violence walk a fine line between the artistic and cheesy. A few videos come to mind that unfortunately tip towards the latter category, but Craig Murray’s visual creation for Converge‘s latest video, ‘Axe to Fall,’ achieves the merciless, vicious effect of the song itself.

Over a decade ago, Nine Inch Nails and Tool videos were either banned or repeatedly looped on MTV, and the influence on this stunning piece of work is obvious. Though short, a hearty serving of imagery is condensed into just under two minutes, and was exclusively premiered on Fearnet as of yesterday.

If the annual ‘Saw’ movie series hadn’t become the schlocky, give-’em-what-they-want horror eye candy it is today, it might look something like the ‘Axe To Fall’ video. Brutal and underground, it’s right up there with Psyopus‘ ‘Duct Tape Smile’ and Narrows‘ ‘Gypsy Kids.’

Frontman Jacob Bannon told Fearnet that Murray was aiming for “Chris Cunningham meets Michel Gondry” in this project. Anticipating the release of Converge’s new full-length, ‘Axe to Fall,’ on Oct. 20, the video is sure to raise the barometer of excitement amongst fans.
