Cliff Burton’s Father Opens Up ‘Metallica: Back to the Front’ Photo Book
It’s a big year for Metallica with a new album on the horizon and the 30th anniversary of the landmark Master of Puppets. Of course, it also tragically marks the 30th anniversary of the death of bassist Cliff Burton. His father, Ray, has received the collector’s edition of Metallica: Back to the Front, the historic look back on the legendary album, and he goes through the page turner in the video above.
The book spans 276 pages, complete with never-before-seen images collected from the band’s personal archives, fans, roadies and elsewhere. Cracking the spine of Metallica: Back to the Front, Ray scans the pages, finding a familiar one as he says, “That’s a good picture of little Cliff with his Rickenbacker that’s in the [Rock and Roll] Hall of Fame.” Continuing to flip through the book, he comes across a new image, adding, “My gosh, I’ve never seen this picture before. That guy Matt [Taylor, author] — really, really thorough.”
Ray was also interviewed for the book, along with those involved in the Master of Puppets album and tour cycle, including anecdotes from tourmates Anthrax and Armored Saint. Lars Ulrich flipped through his copy at the end of July, commenting on the exhaustive effort, humorously stating, you’ll find out “everything that happened every day for that whole year, or however long it was — what we had for breakfast in Oklahoma City on April 23, 1986, it’s all in here.”
Metallica: Back to the Front will be out on Sept. 13 through Moonrise Media. The collector’s edition, as seen in the video above, will include a piece of a road case used on the Master of Puppets tour and will be released on Aug. 30.
Metallica will be streaming their upcoming performance in Minneapolis in celebration of the opening of U.S. Bank Stadium, the new home of the Minnesota Vikings. The thrash legends will be joined by Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat, playing to a sold out 70,000 capacity crowd. The show will be put on in conjunction with Pandora on Aug. 20 at 9PM CT.
