Bring Me the Horizon’s Oli Sykes: ‘We Like the Idea of Breaking Into the Mainstream’

Those who’ve followed Bring Me the Horizon in recent years have undoubtedly noticed the band’s transition to more accessible music. It’s been an evolution over time and one that the group appears ready to continue with their follow-up to That’s the Spirit.

Speaking with Kerrang, vocalist Oli Sykes stated that the band has 30 song ideas “in various stages of non-completion,” but adds that they are starting to get a feel for where the music is going.

“I don’t think any Bring Me The Horizon fan is going to be surprised at this next album sounding different to the last one,” the frontman explained. “I kind of know where I want to go, but it’s also falling into place as we write the thing. We want it to be different and we want to push forward. We like the idea of breaking into the mainstream. We’re not ashamed of that, we don’t see it as selling out. We see it as a great challenge, to make music that can be adored by more people but still retain who we are. That is the goal.”

Sykes cites Twenty One Pilots as a band whose approach mirrors what they want to do. “[They’re] popular and accessible, but without compromising their integrity or who they are. That’s a real challenge now,” says the singer.

While no official timeline for the new album has been announced, Sykes says it’s his hope that fans will be able to hear new music from the band by year’s end.
