Oh happy day! Mastodon are one of the most fascinating acts in modern metal taking their sound in a variety of different directions, creating a style of music that can truly only be classified as “Mastodon.” Now, their plans to record an EP have taken a turn and it appears the Georgia quartet have another full length offering on the horizon.

The new release will follow-up 2014’s Once More ‘Round the Sun, which brought new hits in “The Motherload,” “High Road” and more. Drummer Brann Dailor recently spoke with 93.3 WMMR about everything Mastodon, revealing what the group has been up to in regards to writing. “At the moment it’s just a ton of riffs and they’re starting to form songs,” he began.

Digging a bit deeper, Dailor went on, “We have some stuff that didn’t make the last record – not because it wasn’t awesome, but it just didn’t fit the vibe of the stuff we had. We were going to do this winter EP thing, but the material’s morphed into more than that, so I think it’ll warrant a full album release. We have to whittle it down. We go over to Bill’s [Kelliher] basement and sit down and riff it out – throw everything up against the wall and see what sticks.”

Dailor recently spent a week on Late Night With Seth Meyers as part of the house band sitting in for regular drummer Fred Armisen (Portlandia). He talked about this experience in the interview as well, explaining the nuances of performing on set like giving the guest one second of time to sit down and “collect themselves” before stopping and letting Meyers speak with the guest.

Mastodon will be embarking on a European tour in August and a full list of tour stops can be found here.
