There are supergroups, and there are supergroups. When this writer first heard tell of a project that was to feature members of Revenge, Conqueror, Axis of Advance and Primordial into one entity known as Blood Revolt, the initial reaction was, "Whoa, awesome!!!" followed quickly by, "Er, how will that work?" Those of us familiar with the first three groups -- Conqueror, whose primitive war metal gnashings evolved into Revenge's tightly-controlled grinding black chaos, and Axis of Advance, whose deadly black assault took no prisoners and left none breathing -- know just how far along the outer reaches of extremity they dwell.

Celtic dark metallers Primordial, on the other hand, are known better for its majestic pagan melodies, achingly evocative doom odes, far-reaching emotional heft and frontman A.A. Nemtheanga's distinctly grandiose vocals. It was a risky experiment, but one worth undertaking, at least as far as band members J. Read (Conqueror/Revenge,), C. Ross (Axis of Advance) and A. A. Nemtheanga were concerned. Profound Lore, Invictus, and Metal Blade U.K. have joined forces to unleash the Revolt upon the globe this July -- you have been warned.

Blood Revolt is a challenging listen -- at times the juxtaposition of soaring vocals and murderous blasts is jarring, and the music itself is as bestial and unrelenting as anything its creators wrote in their past lives, but yet, it makes sense. Beauty and brutality lie side by side, playing off one another and pushing limits to tell the story of 'Indoctrine' -- that of one man's journey away from religion towards salvation, vengeance and untimely death. Controversial? In a world where most metal fans prefer the lines between genres drawn clearly in black and white, Blood Revolt is an enigmatic, gleefully subversive middle finger in the air to those who'd try to pigeonhole its.

Comments A.A. Nemtheanga: "In an age of compromise Blood Revolt is genuine rebellion. Pushing the boundaries of what is accepted in 'extreme' metal, Blood Revolt is metal with teeth, like it should be. Genuine violence and aggression mixed with the kind of very real and very dark subject matter that would make other bands heads spin. No cartoon imagery or fantastical pseudo religious hocus pocus, this is the sniper filing down the pin before picking off innocents, this is the suicide bombers sweaty greasy hand on the ignition, dead bodies piled in the politics of the mass grave. Unforgiving and unrelenting elitism ..."
