Huntress Vocalist Jill Janus Lists Her Favorite Los Angeles Live Venues

Stefan Falke

Last week we premiered ‘Eight of Swords,’ the striking new video from California trad-metallers Huntress. The clip raised a lot of eyebrows with its combination of swords and sorcery imagery, fantastical landscapes and sexuality. Now that they’re starting to gain some early online buzz, Huntress is hitting the live circuit hard. Lead singer Jill Janus is a staple of the Los Angeles nightlife scene, once fronting all-star hard rock cover band Chelsea Girls and also DJing at several clubs. Noisecreep asked Janus to give us the skinny on the five coolest venues in the Los Angeles area.

Viper Room (8852 West Sunset Blvd, Hollywood)
“This intimate venue purges the Sunset Strip stigma, something that turns me off about performing west of Vine Street. Viper Room’s small stage is fun and the sound production is top notch. It wins me over for its legit yet perpetually cool factor. Huntress plays Viper Room Friday, Nov. 11th with Moab and Ides of Gemini.”

Club Nokia (800 West Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles)
“I had the killer opportunity of opening for Motörhead at Club Nokia with my former band Chelsea Girls in 2009. This venue is no joke, it’s the big leagues. Huntress will take the stage at Club Nokia on Jan. 7th, opening for Sanctuary and Warbringer.”

The Roxy (9009 West Sunset Blvd, Hollywood)
“A legendary theatre that continues to be one step ahead of all Sunset Strip venues. The Roxy’s hospitality with bands is widely known, I’ve always been treated like a star there. Offering acts a large stage, impeccable sound and spectacular lighting, The Roxy knows how to deliver amazing talent to music fans.”

Three Clubs (1123 Vine Street, Hollywood)
“Three Clubs is small, dark cabaret located at the filthy intersection of Santa Monica and Vine Street in Hollywood. Ghosts of old drunks mingle with a young bawdy crowd. We love Three Clubs’ seedy vibe and it’s always a blast to play there.”

BLVD (2631 Whittier Blvd, Los Angeles)
“Underground and understated, Boyle Height’s BLVD wasn’t legit, but it was one helluva good time. Recently closed, it was an ideal venue for underground metal. Always dirty and always loud, you will be missed BLVD.”
