Behemoth’s Nergal in Talks to Appear on Polish Version of ‘The Voice’

While Bruce Dickinson turned down a chance to appear on the British version of ‘The Voice,’ Nergal AKA Adam Darski, the vocalist/guitarist of Polish extreme metal terrorists Behemoth told our friends across the pond at Terrorizer that he is talks to be a judge on ‘The Voice of Poland,’ which is his native country’s version of ‘The Voice.’

In case you aren’t up on recent pop culture phenomena, ‘The Voice’ is a reality talent competition series where singers vie for a spot on a celebrity coach’s team based on their voice and their voice alone; they perform with the coach’s backs to them and are chosen to move forward accordingly.

Nergal, who was seriously ill and battled leukemia last year, only receiving a bone marrow transplant in December, revealed some details, saying that while nothing is official, there is a deal on the table. He said, “I haven’t signed a deal yet, but I got a deal waiting and most probably it’s happening. So it’s going to be fun. The first black metal judge ever in history doing a mainstream thing, you know? People are going to freak out! Some are going to love it, some are going to fucking hate it. But that’s what this music has always been about, right? To provoke, to cause different opinions. The more extreme opinions, the better, I think.”

He also admitted that he is a bit out of his element in the realm of celebrity culture, saying, “This so-called celebrity life is not my environment at all, but I am a part of it if I want it or not. So it’s been crazy. Then the whole case with my sickness and me getting out alive. It just brought some extra attention to it. And there’s definitely some people that want to make some money on it because it’s a cool story for them to write about and stuff, but I was like, ‘Okay, if they’re going to make money, I want to have my share, too.’ I was away from music and away from being active live for a good year, so yeah, I need to get something in return!”

The media in Poland suggested that having Nergal on the program would help attract a different and perhaps younger audience and help it compete against the country’s version of ‘X Factor.’

Big ups to Nergal for having the balls to appear on such a mainstream show, and hey, after a year of sickness, treatments and being off the road, a dude’s gotta work and eat, so we applaud him for going this route.

Noisecreep would also like to point out that this is third time a metal artist has been approached to appear on a reality talent competition series. In addition to the aforementioned Dickinson and Nergal, Judas Priest actually performed on this past season of ‘American Idol.’
