33 Hospitalized After Lightning Strikes Germany’s Rock Am Ring Festival

Thirty three people were hospitalized after lightning struck the Rock Am Ring concert grounds in Mendig, Germany, in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to BBC, German police have stated that all those hospitalized "were placed under observation" but are “in good health.” Check out a video of one of the lightning strikes above.

The Guardian reported that the first bolt of lightning hit the backstage area around 1AM and injured eight people who worked for the festival's production team. Looking at the Rock Am Ring schedule, this strike would have occurred shortly after Marilyn Manson finished his set.

After the first strike, outlets report that people were asked to head for cover under lightning-proof tents and it wasn’t until 4AM that the next bolt hit the festival grounds. This time, the electrostatic discharge landed near the camping area and another 25 people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. The good news is that no one was seriously hurt.

Over 90,000 people were expected to attend the three-day festival this weekend and the wild weather didn’t stop the 30th Rock Am Ring festival from going forward Saturday and Sunday. The likes of Motorhead, Lamb of God, Papa Roach and Rise Against all performed, while Foo Fighters and Slipknot closed out the festival Sunday night into early Monday morning.
