Ronnie James Dio Cancer Organization to Launch ‘Check Yourself’ Program at Metallica’s Orion Music + More Festival

There will be a lot to take in this weekend at Metallica's Orion Music + More festival, but one potential stop for festivalgoers at the event could be a lifesaver. The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund will be on hand at the "My World" festival village to launch their "Check Yourself" Cancer Awareness Program.

The organization, founded in the memory of late metal icon Ronnie James Dio, is seeking to promote cancer awareness and they will be offering sunscreen to help ward off the damaging effects of the sun at the outdoor event.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., with one in five Americans developing a form of it often due to the damaging rays of the sun. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and is the most common form of cancer for young adults age 25-29 and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults age 15-29.

Wendy Dio, who lost her husband Ronnie James Dio to stomach cancer, says, "I would like to thank our friends Metallica and their management for giving our organization this opportunity to bring awareness of skin cancer directly to their fans in this manner. This is a very important message because early detection does save lives."

The Metallica Orion Music + More Festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday (June 8 and 9) at the Detroit-area Belle Isle.
