The members of Black Sabbath are asking fans to send "positive vibes" to guitarist Tony Iommi, who has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, according to a press release. The news comes as the group's original lineup readies its first new album in 33 years, and despite Iommi's health scare, the foursome plans to plow ahead.

"Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan," the band's statement reads, adding that the influential axeman "remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery."

Sabbath has been writing and recording with producer Rick Rubin in Los Angeles, but given Iommi's condition, singer Ozzy Osbourne, drummer Bill Ward and bassist Geezer Butler will reportedly head to London to continue work on the sessions.

No word yet on whether Iommi's treatment will affect a planned 2012 world tour, and as it stands, the heavy metal godheads are slated to perform in June at the Download Festival in Donington Park, England.
