Immortal

I can't recall the first couple seconds of what happened when members of Immortal finally walked onto the Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Masonic Temple stage on March 30. With the struggle to get close to the stage -- and with the struggle to keep three feet away from the stage as security guards tried to keep a gap between expensive monitors and Immortal-fiendng humans --, it was a rough couple first minutes.

"We are Immortal. 'Sons of Darkness,'" guitarist and vocalist said to the crowd three songs later. In the middle of 'Solarfall,' Abbath and bassist Apolloyn took a break to slap and shake hands with fans close to the stage. After some fist raising, Abbath screamed, "F---ing A!" Then they were back into song, with the same intensity as before.

With 2009's 'All Shall Fall' being their eighth record, Immortal had a healthy span of songs to choose from. So the band played some new songs. "You want to hear more new s---? 'Norden on Fire'!"

The band played some old songs. "Want to hear some old s---? We haven't played this one a lot, not till recently." That was the cue for 1995's 'Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms.'

And then the band played some really old songs.

"This next one is an even older one. This next one is pure. Pure what? Pure f---ing holocaust!"

The show was one of two U.S. dates. So it made sense that people would come from all over and abuse as much cheap alcohol as possible. The most unfortunate part of the show was watching several men carry their broken bullet belts out of the pit like they were carrying wounded soldiers out of battle. Rest in peace bullet belts of Brooklyn. Rest in peace.

Immortal's second show in the States show took place April 2 at The Avalon in Los Angeles. Europeans can catch the trio at a couple festivals during the summer, including Hellfest and Wacken.
